I had run this race last year too, but when I signed up again this year, I had wanted this to be a training run for my 2010 NYC Marathon.
I visited to this park y’day with a friend and his family and am glad I went. This park is situated about 1 hours drive west of Jersey City.
Hacklebarney State Park contains of land in a glacial valley carved by the Black River and its tributaries, the Rinehart and Trout Brook. It has a total of 5 miles of hiking trails. The hiking trails vary in difficulty; the trails along the Black River are narrow and rocky, while the majority of the trails are gravel. Good walking or hiking shoes are recommended
History: The land was mined for iron ore during the 18th and 19th centuries, with the final mine closing in 1896, leading to economic devastation of the area. The land for the park was donated to the state in 1924.

Picnic tables and charcoal grills are placed in scenic locations along the ravine with a playground nearby on the hillside. The hiking was wonderful and the sounds of the stream made this park very serene. Hiking along the stream can be difficult, but well worth the challenge. American Beech and Eastern hemlock trees dominate the cool shady slopes of this state forest.
I definitely recommend a visit to this park.
